Student FAQ

The questions admitted students and parents actually ask.

Is Binghamton University actually in Binghamton?

No — and this confuses everyone. The main campus is in the Town of Vestal, directly across the Susquehanna River from the City of Binghamton. The Health Sciences Campus is in Johnson City, and Binghamton University also operates a Downtown Center in Binghamton itself.

How selective is Binghamton?

It is among SUNY's most selective universities, and the School of Management, Watson Engineering and Decker Nursing are more selective than the overall rate. Check binghamton.edu for the current admitted-student profile.

What is the difference between Binghamton University and SUNY Broome?

Binghamton University is a four-year research university (bachelor's through doctoral and professional degrees). SUNY Broome is a two-year community college; many students start there and transfer to Binghamton with a plan.

Where do students live off campus?

The West Side of Binghamton, Downtown Binghamton and Vestal Parkway complexes — see the Housing page. Signing for next year typically happens in the fall.

Do I need a car?

Not as a student: BC Transit and university transportation connect campus, Downtown and the West Side. A car helps for jobs, groceries and winter, but thousands of students manage without one.

How cold does it get?

Properly cold. Expect snow and sustained winter temperatures roughly November through March. Buy the coat and boots in the fall — see our winter guide on binghamton.info.

Is this website run by the university?

No. suny.binghamton.info is an independent guide published by Binghamton.info. Official information — admissions, tuition, registration — lives at binghamton.edu.

Need off-campus housing near Binghamton University?
